The Blessing

B. Keith Chapman, President & CEO

This time last year, most of us could not imagine the challenges we would experience a year later. Seasons in life present their own unique obstacles in which we are faced with choices on how to respond. Our choices can be life-changing and impact far more people than we could ever imagine. Most have a tendency to focus so much on the problems in life that they miss the opportunity to recognize the hidden blessings that are all around them. A quote I recently read from an unknown author says, “The things we take for granted someone else is praying for.” When you apply this quote to your everyday thinking, it has a tendency to change your perspective about how blessed you really are. Life is unpredictable at times and we may never really know what is around the corner. However, our actions, decisions, and perspective can increase our blessings and have a positive impact on those around us.

I am reminded of the lessons learned from the story of the Israelites who were delivered from their bondage in Egypt. Despite being set free and witnessing miracle after miracle, they struggled to see the blessings they experienced along the journey. Their leader, Moses, provided instruction and encouragement; however, the Israelites still made poor choices and suffered many consequences as a result. In Deuteronomy 30:19 Moses relays a message from God to his people, “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” Moses had just shared with the people the Lord’s promise to bless them beyond what they could understand or deserve. However, the promise required a commitment from the people to trust in God and be obedient to His commandments.

The truth is, we have all fallen short of perfect living. However, each day we are faced with decisions and given the ability to choose what is right or wrong. Our obedience to God’s direction in life impacts the blessings that we receive. Jesus said in Luke 11:28, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.” This truth applies to individuals and organizations. As leaders, our responsibility is heightened. Our decisions will impact the blessings experienced in our businesses, organizations, and families. Choose wisely what you do and who you follow.

A blessing is an expression of God’s love for each of us. We all have the ability to be a blessing to those around us. Blessings can be physical actions, charitable gifts, or simply spoken words. When spoken one to another, it provides encouragement, hope, and comfort in times of need. This year has been filled with plenty of challenges and negativity. My prayer for all of you comes from Numbers 6:24-26. We may have had a rough start to this year. However, I pray that you will receive this blessing and be encouraged.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine
on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”

The last part of this year doesn’t have to look like the first. You can’t control everything that happens in life, but you can control your actions and attitude. Be blessed! And be a blessing to those around you.

Challenge: Regardless of what you find around the corner in life, choose wisely what you do and who you follow. Look for opportunities to bless those around you. Don’t forget your responsibility as a leader; look for and celebrate the hidden blessings along the way.
